Food 2 Kids
Club Hero

Can you imagine coming home from school on Friday afternoon and not being able to find a snack in the house? What if your mom and dad worked during the weekends, and no one was at home to make dinner? What if there was no running water or electricity in your house, and you didn't eat a full meal for the entire weekend? Now imagine how you might feel at school on Monday morning while the teacher is trying to explain something new. Would you really be able to think about anything but food? Probably not. Unfortunately, this is the way many kids in San Angelo ISD feel on Monday mornings. Now we have a better understanding of what teachers have known for a long time...a hungry child cannot learn.

It was brought to the attention of the Junior League of San Angelo that approximately 48% of the children in the San Angelo Independent School District were on the free and reduced lunch program. Of that percentage, many of those children could meet the national standard that would identify them as chronically hungry. Food 2 Kids, which started in 2007, is the signature program of the Junior League of San Angelo in association with the Concho Valley Food Bank to provide nourishment to children who are in jeopardy of not having enough to eat on the weekends. Each week, the children that qualify for Food 2 Kids will take home a sack of non-perishable food items for the weekend. Last year, Food 2 Kids served 424 children across 8 elementary schools. This year, it is the goal of the Junior League to increase that number and serve as many children as we can.  The Junior League is currently sending out 66 crates of food each week to the participating schools.

How can you help? Monetary donations are always welcome. Funding is our greatest need. Because the food for this program is specifically chosen for its nutritional value, weight and child-friendly accessibility, the food must be purchased by the Junior League of San Angelo.

We need more donations to buy enough food to grow the program to the point where it is available at all San Angelo area schools. You can mail a donation to: The Junior League of San Angelo 36 W. Beauregard Ste. 603, San Angelo, Texas 76903 or for more information on how you can help please contact the Junior League of San Angelo office.
